FLORENCE, Ky. – The Florence Y’alls (22-34) enjoyed the last laugh in a see-saw game, defeating the Joliet Slammers (27-30) 5-3 at Thomas More Stadium on Saturday night.
The ball game was tied at 1-1, 2-2, and 3-3 as late as the eighth inning. In the bottom of the eighth, Anthony Brocato mashed his team-leading 17th home run of the season. The all-star put the Y’alls in front with the big fly, which traveled 437 feet in the air. Brocato is now fourth in the Frontier League in home runs, and in the top ten for runs batted in.
While the Y’alls never trailed throughout the night, the offense still had trouble stringing together productive at-bats. Brocato’s home run was Florence’s only hit with runners on base, but it got the job done.
Ethan Stern and Bryant Flete also hit home runs in the contest. Ray Zuberer picked up an RBI groundout as well. Brennan Price recorded a two-hit night for Florence.
A pitcher making his professional debut started the game for the Y’alls in righty Jared Flueck. Flueck, signed this morning, allowed only one earned run over four innings. Tommy Simmer, Karl Craigie, Sean Hughes, and Evy Ruibal all came out of the bullpen. Ruibal earned the save with a three-strikeout ninth inning.
The Y’alls and Slammers play one more time at Thomas More Stadium before the Frontier League’s all-star break gets underway. Joliet’s scheduled starter is all-star Cam Aufderheide, with Florence’s pitcher to be announced. First pitch is at 1:07 p.m.
